Fighting Fire - A RealWorld Travel Photography Essay

Photography by Gary Moore

Firefighters and fire service personnel exist in almost every community in Canada. At present, the total number of people who are considered firefighters, including every type known, is approaching 200,000. Firefighters have been active since before Canada's Confederation in 1867. The men and women associated with Canada's fire service organizations have contributed, very significantly, to the health, safety and prosperity of our nation. In many areas, they have been a major part of the adhesive holding communities together.

For most of the people who work in the fire service, their job is necessarily one involving a high degree of risk. Every year before and since Confederation, fire service personnel have died in the line of duty, while contributing to the wealth of Canada.

Firefighters work hard to protect our lives and property. Their job is fraught with many perils. We take a moment to remember those who have answered their last alarm for they did so that we would be safe. This essay is in memory of them.
